Letter from the President: Our Employee Onboarding Experience

In order to continue growing like we have over the past four years, we need to hire and onboard new employees. One of the areas we’ve focused on improving over the past year is the onboarding process, including developing our new employees. I want to start by saying that Services Plus is not perfect at this. However, we have put a lot of time and energy into improving our processes and have seen impressive results.
We know this is a tough employment market, and we work hard to find the right people, do whatever we can to make their onboarding experience positive, and continue to work with them on developing their skills should they want to grow. Part of every employee’s first day is spent with our Human Resources department in an orientation session. We talk about workplace expectations and go through a review of the benefits that we offer. In addition, the new employees take a facility tour to meet their supervisor and really get an idea of who Services Plus is and how we operate, where the lunchroom is, etc. I also spend time with every new employee during orientation. I get the chance to meet them and talk about our number one priority - Safety First. I believe Services Plus does our part in maintaining a safe work environment, and we know that we have opportunities to improve with the input from our employees, especially our new employees. I also talk about the one thing I can’t control - their behavior - and ask them to really focus on putting Safety First. Nothing is worth getting hurt for.
We spend time during the first few months of employment understanding what people want to do and help them get there. If we have employees who want to do the job they are working forever, we help them do that; if people want to grow at Services Plus, we help them do that too. We spent six months completely redesigning our Training Program last year and have a new curriculum that has detailed training checklists and courses for every position, along with work instructions for every task in the company. We know that if we have transparent processes that allow people to be successful in roles they want, then we should have happy employees that will be with us for a long time!
We’re on a journey to improve our employee onboarding experience at Services Plus, and I love the recent results!
